Mechanic & Related Joint Negotiations Update

On Monday, March 28, senior leadership of the company, under the stealth of darkness, held a town hall meeting in a hangar at DFW. Your negotiating committee, as well as local union leadership, was not informed of this meeting and would have welcomed the opportunity to have attended, to express our concerns regarding negotiations. During the meeting senior leadership attempted to take negotiations to the membership on the floor. The company kept focusing on one subject (compensation), which your committee agrees is a critical piece of the process. However, your committee is not willing to accept inferior contractual language, to subsidize any pay raises. Your committee has expressed our displeasure to this tactic across the table on Tuesday morning.

We share your frustration; however, your committee will remain focused on the negotiating process to ensure we meet the needs of our members.

Your negotiating committee, during this session, worked on the following articles:

  • Leaves of Absences: we have exchanged multiple proposals with the company.
  • Hours of service/Rotation of shifts: we continued to work on combining these two articles that we initially received from the company last week and are preparing to pass.
  • Shift Swaps: we began to draft our proposal to pass to the company.

The parties have agreed to the negotiations schedule below for the next 3 months:

Fleet Service Negotiations Update

The Joint Association Fleet Committee exchanged the following proposals with the company this week:

  • Hours of Work
  • Recognition of Rights and Compliance
  • Grievance Procedures
  • Meal Periods
  • Leaves of Absence
  • Shift Differential/Shift Definitions
  • Training, Travel and Meal Per Diems

We are pleased to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement on the Training, Travel and Meal Per Diem article.

Despite this progress, unfortunately, the company did hold a meeting this week without inviting Association representatives, and actually left a bargaining session in order to attend.

Unbeknownst to the negotiating team, Robert Isom, American Airlines’ Chief Operating Officer, conducted a town hall meeting on Tuesday in Dallas without notifying any of our team members. American’s Director of Employee Relations, Jim Weel—who is part of the company’s M&R negotiating team and attended the session that morning—left the bargaining meeting in order to attend the town hall. This lack of transparency and commitment to the bargaining process will not be tolerated.

It is clear that American Airlines is not providing the membership with entirely accurate information, and that they are employing common management tactics to disrupt negotiations. While Mr. Isom assures us that the company is not holding up the process, they continue to offer our negotiation teams proposals which do not recognize the role our members have in sustaining American’s profits—and those are proposals that we will not accept.

Profit Sharing Program FAQ – March 31, 2016

Since sharing the news of our proposed profit sharing program, people have wanted to know more about the details of the plan. Here are answers to some of the questions you’ve asked.

1. How many people are included in this profit sharing program? Which workgroups will be included? Can international employees participate?

The majority of mainline employees – more than 100,000 people – as well as employees of PSA, Piedmont and Envoy will be a part of this program. International employees will also be eligible for the plan. Employees at the level 5 and above levels, who participate in other at-risk compensation programs, will not be included.

2. Will this program be for groups that do not have a new contract in place? Yes. Those groups will complete their negotiations and regardless of when those are completed, those represented employees will participate in this program provided their unions agree.

3. Will profit sharing now be part of our contracts or is this just a one-time, evaluate it every year, program? We have presented a side letter to the leadership at each union that will become effective immediately upon signing in order for our employees to be eligible to participate in profit sharing. The program starts in 2016 and will continue each year.

4. Will the payout be uniform among everyone in the pool or will it vary by wage? It will be a percentage of your salary. The plan calls for 5% of pre-tax earnings (before profit sharing is taken out) to be shared among all eligible participants. The methodology for calculating an individual employee’s distribution will be computed by taking profit sharing as a percentage of all eligible salaries and applying that percentage to an individual employee’s eligible earnings.

5. What determines my specific payout?

We will put 5% of pre-tax net income into the pool and then take that dollar figure and divide it by the total eligible earnings of the eligible population. That will determine the payout percentage. If you multiply that payout percentage by your eligible earnings you will get your payout.

6. What kind of pay is included in the calculation? Is it all pay? Lump sums (people at the top of the range) or just base pay? Most types of pay are included, including base pay and overtime. Incentive payments (such as Triple Play) and commissions (such as AAdvantage Cash and Barclays Crew Cash) are not included. Further details will be available once the plan document is finalized.

7. Some workgroups (LUS Flight Crew Training Instructors, LUS Flight Simulator Engineers, TWU-represented employees at Envoy) still have previous profit sharing in their current contracts. What happens to those? We have approached those groups’ respective union leaders and invited them to participate in this new plan in lieu of their current plans.

8. When would the first payout be? March 2017.

9. Do I have to be employed in 2017 at the time of the payment to receive it? What if I get terminated before the payment date? What if I resign midway through the year? What if I am on LOA during the year or when the profit sharing is supposed to be paid? Generally, you must be employed on the date of payout to receive it. Employees who retire, or end employment because of disability or death, are also eligible. We will have more details soon.

10. Is there a minimum threshold before the company starts paying into the profit pool? No. It begins with the first dollar of profit.
